Pearwood Drawer Cabinet (2002)

Pearwood, solid and veneer.
48" (H) x 18" (W) x 12" (D)

This is Krenov’s “Pearwood Drawer Cabinet,” built in 2002 and the last piece he made during his tenure at the College of the Redwoods program in Fort Bragg.

It is a prime example of the proportion and scale of Krenov’s later work, with a small veneered carcase atop a leggy stand. Krenov made this particular form twice, the “Drawer Cabinet,” characterized by an interior filled with drawers of different sizes.

The small hand carved pulls and pillowed drawer fronts are a signature of his work, though even in his last years, Krenov was continuing to play with new elements – the leg shape on this piece, deftly faceted and lightly splayed, was a new shape for Jim.
